The twenties were a time of fun and partying. There are many reasons why it was called the Roaring Twenties. Most of the American people were living a great life and were able to afford luxury items, even though this didnt apply to every one many believed that it was excellent and exciting a time of great hopes. Not only did industry grow so did science, fads, laws, beliefs, arts, social lives changed, sports and the various different news from around the globe. There were many reasons for the boom they were: Mass production: Factories around the USA could use electricity and set up assembly lines and make objects quickly. The cars were made identical to make them easier to make and so they are cheaper. America was being paid back loaned that it had lent other countries during the war, on top of this they were making interest. The banks now had lots of money to lend to people setting up a business or for people to buy on the margin. Taxation was kept low and businesses and companies able to keep much of the profit to invest in new efficient factories that produced goods at a cheaper price. Advertising also played a part in the boom, these convinced people to buy their items. They exaggerated. Advertising took place on the Posters, radio newspapers, magazines and cinema, they encouraged people to buy more and more, and the families had many more items than the rest of the world. A main meeting place of these men was that of the Carracci studio in Bologna, where in place of educated topics they would talk of gossip and jest. Annibale Carracci, the younger of the Carracci brothers, was not as masterful in verbal wit as these men were, so he instead turned to painting. So, through his own paintings of Saint Sebastian, River Landscape and Venus, a Satyr, and Two Amorini, Annibale Carracci became known as a distinguished pictorial humorist of the late sixteenth century. In his rendition of Saint Sebastian Annibale Carracci took his pictorial humor one step further by adding in a subliminal erotic message to the piece. Saint Sebastian is usually depicted with my arrows piecing through his torso and has a deathly pallor about him, instead of following what other artists, such as Reni or Honthorst, Carracci depicts Sebastian as fully nude with only a single arrow piercing his side. In order to cover Saint Sebastian's private parts Carracci "skillfully" places the arrow so the shaft and the feathers/penne[1] lay completely cover his decency. The arrow becomes a visual jest because it covers everything but reveals everything at the same time. Carracci further explored the act of omitting the main narrative of the story to make up the main narrative of the story. In his painting River Landscape, he depicts a boat with couples in it who are seemingly having a pleasant ride down the river but, Annibale places a large tree that goes through the composition and blocks the viewers line of sight of part of the boat. This entices the viewer's thoughts that everything is not what it seems and that couples might be up to something immoral.[2] Continuing with his style of emphasizing what the viewer cannot see Carracci depicts a scene in the work Venus, a Satyr, and Two Amorini where a satyr is gazing upon the goddess who has her back turned to the viewer. The satyr's gaze is wide and he is practically drooling while looking at the goddess front side. This entices the viewer to imagine what exactly the satyr is seeing or not seeing, because some say that Annibale's cousin Ludovico posed as the goddess for this painting.[3] The amorino[4] on the lower left corner is perched between the goddess's legs and has his head up and is licking his lips, which is imagined to be that the amorino has just delved into oral pleasure with the goddess.[5] Within this article the author, Patricia Simons, almost praises Carracci for his wit and humorous undertones that he places into his works. She engages the reader with thought provoking facts that go in depth but, also lets the reader make their own assumptions about Carracci as an artist, she also gives many good sources to look at and go to if the reader chooses to do so. She doesn't pick a side or argument per say in her article, she mainly just states what she has observed and researched for her own about Carracci's humorous works. There is a lot of information within this article that one would not usually learn in a typical classroom setting. In many classes Annibale Carracci is only touched upon briefly but, this article brings so much more to light and spreads great knowledge and understanding to those who did not know much about this topic. A reaction from this article is one of intrigue and interest based on first time learning about satirical and mildly erotic paintings from the late sixteenth century. Controversy is a big deal when talking about this topic because, of the topic itself and the fact that Annibale is borderline making fun of Saints and goddesses in his works. Giving a phallic symbol to a saint who is being martyred is not the normal thing for an upstanding citizen to do. There are various forms of humanitarian intervention including protection of humanitarian aid operations, use of military forces to deliver humanitarian aid such as food, water, medicine and shelter, protecting victims of violence and fighting violence perpetrators in states under threat. The humanitarian intervention is attributed to the role played by the UN Security Council in promoting international peace and security through authorization of military force to respond to severe atrocities. Written Critical Analysis of a Literary Poetry To his Love by Ivor Gurney - Essay Example Gurney loved the countryside and often took long walks enjoying its beauty. He started composing music in 1904 at the age of 14. His scholarship enabled him to enroll himself at the Royal College of Music in 1911, but his mood swings made it difficult for him to focus on academic work. He suffered from bipolar, manic depression, poor health, and had his first breakdown in 1913. After convalescing, he returned to college (Pamela Blevins, 2008, p77) World War I had an adverse effect on Gurney’s college education and that is the time when he chose to enlist as a private. He was deployed at the Western Front where he seriously took to writing poetry. (Michael Hurd, 2011) It was rather unfortunate that he was badly wounded in April 1917, when he was in the middle of writing poems. After recovering, he went back to the front. Another very unfortunate mishap that took place was that Gurney was senselessly gassed four months later, and had to be hospitalized. However, once again he to ok to writing poetry once he was discharged from hospital. But as fate would have it, once again he suffered a serious breakdown in March 1918 and yet once more, spent his time composing and writing poetry during his stint in hospital. After gradually regaining his emotional stability, he was discharged honorably from Lamia Benmoussa 3 the army in October 1918. He returned to the Royal College of Music, but sadly his mental stability continued to worsen and he was finally forced to drop out. He had suffered so much in life and by 1922, his family declared him to be insane. The following fifteen years of his life was spent in different asylums but still continued his writing during those bitter years. He contacted tuberculosis, became very sick and breathed his last on December 26th 1937 at the age of 47, in the City of London Mental Hospital. (Stuart Lee, The Ivor Gurney Collection). Gurney wrote his first elegiac World War I poem â€Å"To His Love† from the deep trenches at Seaton Delaval, Northumberland in 1917. His poetic technique was simplistic yet captivated the reader to focus upon the goodness of common things. His poems highlight conflicting memories that reflected the pain and trauma in his life. Gurney’s poetry is one that seeks simple honesty in the middle of contemporary ideas and other commonplace expressions. In his poems, he expresses the after-effects of gas and the trauma he faced while at the front, and about his experiences following his discharge from the Army. (Jennifer Kilgore-Caradec, p.38) In the poem, â€Å"To His Love†, Gurney begins on a sober note with a traditional sort of elegy, reminiscing about the happy days spent in the past, with his friend, but sadly now he lies dead. He is unable to even glance at his friend’s lacerated body and filled with grief, expresses himself through a note of rising hysteria as Lamia Benmoussa 4 he feels helpless in trying to erase the grotesque memory of his beloved frie nd. (Glynn Maxwell, 2011). There is mention of the River Severn and Gloucestershire, where, together in the company of his dear friend, are associated with two themes in the poem. The poem is a soliloquy and an elegy in which one of the soldiers is found talking to the fiance’ or the girlfriend about the death of a soldier. He mourns with grief at this loss and regrets that he has lost the company of this soldier forever and will never be able to redeem that pleasure again. Gurney’s inspiration for this poem was drawn from the supposed death of Willy Harvey who was his dearest friend, in August 1916. When his friend was alive they had spent such wonderful days together, but now the poem describes the harsh reality of his friend’s death which is described in this poem. In fact, Harvey was taken as
