Nerd Camp

Nerd Camp When I was a child I was a nerd. (I know this comes as a big shock to many of you. But its true) Being a nerd, I did nerd things. I read a lot of Star Wars books. I wore a fanny pack in the front with extra glasses cleaner and wax for my braces. While other kids did their fifth grade science reports on, say, baking powder volcanos, I did mine on The Physics of Baseball. Also, I went to nerd camp. In 1998, when I was about to enter the 6th grade, my mom got a flier for something called the Talent Development Institute, or TDI. TDI was supposed to be a camp for talented and gifted children. Other than being REAL GOOD at reading, I didnt know what my talents or gifts might be, but I went anyway because hey, camp. Talent Development turned out to mean do a lot of really cool creative things with other geeky children. That first year, I dissected birds, took my first creative writing class, and learned how to make a turtle to move around a computer screen using the MicroWorlds programming environment, the basis of which was developed here at MIT. I spent two more years at the camp, taking more programming classes (including my first HTML class), river biology experiments, improv, and lots of other stuff. Then, when I entered my final year as a camper, the director approached me and said: hey, why dont you come back next year and teach a class? Wait, I thought. You mean I get to come back to camp, and youll pay me to do so? Yep. My first summer teaching at TDI was summer of 2001. I taught movie-making to 7th-9th graders using iMovie. Later, I added music production with Garageband. I also ran the Active Games evening activity lots of capture the flag and shakes and minnows and helped out the overnight supervisors in the dorms. So I started teaching at TDI 10 years ago. And, with the exception of last year (when an important family obligation intervened), Ive been there ever since. Last night I returned from TDI 2011. Hence my radio silence on the blogs (and Facebook) for the last week or so. TDI was, as it has always been, an incredibly rewarding experience. This year was different, however. It was rewarding in a new, scary, good sort of way. See, when I started attending TDI, nearly all of the staff were experienced, local middle school teachers who helped out for this one week. But because TDI has been going on for so long, and because the community is so strong, more and more alumni began teaching as I did. And now, nearly the entire staff are not only TDI alumni, but more importantly former students of mine. This turns out to be a pretty trippy experience. There are serene, professional instructional staff at the camp now who I first taught as drippy-nosed, hyperactive ten year olds. And all but the very oldest campers were not yet born when I first attended TDI. This is all a bit scary. But its also very rewarding. This year, I turned over control of movie making and music production which had become two of the most popular classes at TDI to four of my former students to run. I taught class in Digital Literacy and took on more overnight duties. So my former kids had the opportunity to grow and challenge themselves, and I had the opportunity to think about new, interesting things Id like to teach and do. Its also been incredibly rewarding to see these kids grow up into real people. Many of my former students who are now staff are about to enter college. One of them was first introduced to music production in my class as a 6th grader, and he plans to attend conservatory for classical guitar next year. I cant even begin to tell you how proud that makes me feel. Beyond all of this old-age reflection Ive been undergoing, theres also just the good, clean fun of being at camp. Here are some vignettes from the week that was: Kriff Julia Kriff Julia are undoubtably two of the most adorable campers to ever step foot on TDIs campus. Kriff is 11 and Julia is 10. Heres Kriff, on my shoulders: Before this picture was taken, Kriff who stands at about my waist was right in front of me, looking up and talking earnestly. As I listened and nodded, I spread my arms apart above his head, as if I were going to crush his skull between my hands. At that moment, Kriff flung his arms around me in a hug. And I said, aww, KriffI cant crush your skull like a paper bag now!! And he looked up at me, grinned, and piped up why? Because I melted your resolve with my warm embrace? So I threw him up on my shoulders and told my buddy Max to take a picture, to which Kriff yelled hey, Imma do the Fonz. Ayyyyyyyyy What didnt go so well for Kriff, however, was the dark chocolate tasting exploratory session: Heres Julia, with my longtime friend (we were fellow campers at the inaugural TDI in 1998) Emily and I: Julia was absolutely hilarious. She always had a pair of pink superballs with her and would throw and chase them. She made her website (in my digital literacy class) all about a pair of talking velociraptors, complete with dialogue. For my friend Emilys class Artist Block Party basically a make whatever you want during arts crafts deal Julia made a bunch of little puffball people. Not content with having made these people, she then made Extreme Puffball Adventure Park, a sort of Six Flags for them all to play on: Nerd Camp Reveille Many of you may know Reveille, the iconic wake-up bugle call that serves as an alarm clock for campers everywhere. I used to make one of the campers who played the trumpet play it every morning, but he didnt bring his trumpet this year. So instead, every morning at 7:00 AM, I went with something a little bit different: TDI: The Movie One thing that probably needs explaining is that I am the King of nerd camp. Years and years ago I nicknamed the unruliest among them gremlins, and ever since, I have been nigh-worshipped as The Gremlin Lord. Its applied Machiavelli: I am both loved and feared, as you can see (for a split second, around :43) in this trailer from the movie making class, TDI: The Movie Trailer: Keenan, Grady, and Jamison are all former students of mine who are now staff, and Jamison taught the Improv class this year, which inspired the concluding pun. As I was going through pictures for this post I found this photo from 2007, when I orchestrated a human pyramid from a bunch of the campers. Grady the kid in the white shirt in the center of the pyramid, now a teacher and attending UVM in the fall had commented on it saying something to the effect of TDI will be my family forever. I feel the same way. Ive been involved with TDI more than half of my life. And I never feel as good, as relaxed, and as at peace with myself and the world as when I am back there. So here are my takeaways from TDI, for all of you out there: Always remember the example you set for others, especially those younger than you, because one day they will fill your shoes. What matters most in life is family, broadly defined: those whom you have grown with, whom you support and who support you in return, because they are the people who will always fill a particular place in your heart that nothing else quite can. And finally: never, ever be ashamed to be excited by the things you love, even if they are things from your childhood like nerd camp. Saint Sebastian is usually depicted with my arrows piecing through his torso and has a deathly pallor about him, instead of following what other artists, such as Reni or Honthorst, Carracci depicts Sebastian as fully nude with only a single arrow piercing his side. She engages the reader with thought provoking facts that go in depth but, also lets the reader make their own assumptions about Carracci as an artist, she also gives many good sources to look at and go to if the reader chooses to do so. She doesn't pick a side or argument per say in her article, she mainly just states what she has observed and researched for her own about Carracci's humorous works. There is a lot of information within this article that one would not usually learn in a typical classroom setting. In many classes Annibale Carracci is only touched upon briefly but, this article brings so much more to light and spreads great knowledge and understanding to those who did not know much about this topic. A reaction from this article is one of intrigue and interest based on first time learning about satirical and mildly erotic paintings from the late sixteenth century. Controversy is a big deal when talking about this topic because, of the topic itself and the fact that Annibale is borderline making fun of Saints and goddesses in his works. Giving a phallic symbol to a saint who is being martyred is not the normal thing for an upstanding citizen to do. Another humorous thing is that this was all started around men and basically based upon the male sense of humor, which includes a lot of sexual and phallic jokes. I got to choose one of three places to live, the options were next to Mount Kilauea, Mount Baker, or Mount Rainier. Before I gave them my answer I was going to research all the volcanoes, when I was done with all my research I found out that I want to live within ten miles of Mount Baker. For example, MountKilauea has a non-explosive eruption, so that means the lava would run down the side, instead of it bursting out everywhere. The only problem is it can be very destructive and clear out anything in its path. Mount Rainier is also a non-explosive volcano, but can be just as destructive as an explosive volcano. Then theres Mount Baker, it is an explosive volcano, it will erupt and you wont be able to run from it like you could if it were a non-explosive volcano. There are all different times that a volcano might erupt, but no telling when. Mount Kilauea is the worlds most active volcano, so it can erupt any day or everyday. Mount Kilauea is around 300,000-600,000 years old and has been active ever since. Mount Rainier has not erupted in he past 2,200 years. Last July they found out that Mount Rainier is going to have the most detructive eruption ever in the United states. Mount Baker hasnt shown much activity since 1978. By 1978 Mount Baker somewhat has stopped showing activity. These three volcanoes also have history of seismic activity. Humanitarian interventi on can be defined as the use of coercive military force in the internal affairs of a sovereign state with the aim of addressing massive human rights violation so as to prevent widespread human suffering within a state by other state(s) (Weiss 2006, 3). There are various forms of humanitarian intervention including protection of humanitarian aid operations, use of military forces to deliver humanitarian aid such as food, water, medicine and shelter, protecting victims of violence and fighting violence perpetrators in states under threat. The humanitarian intervention is attributed to the role played by the UN Security Council in promoting international peace and security through authorization of military force to respond to severe atrocities. This role is seen in interventions during the atrocities in Somalia, Rwanda, Kosovo and East Timor. The humanitarian intervention plays effective roles in conflict resolution in peacekeeping through collective interventions by the UN as well as regional bodies sanctioned by the UN Security Council. The humanitarian interventions has always been treated as suspects since they are viewed to be used as mere vehicles for national aggrandizement, institutions of political and economic systems that are detested by indigenous population and imposition of puppets in power. These issues raised by humanitarian intervention makes it impractical for balancing sovereign rights and global values. Given the US has been shadowing its operations in invading other countries under the umbrella of humanitarian intervention and UN charter article 2 chapters 7 that calls for enforcement of measures that aid in international peace and security. Most of the humanitarian intervention involves attempt of stemming out the tides of threats to international peace and security (Pattinson 2010, 113). Written Critical Analysis of a Literary Poetry To his Love by Ivor Gurney - Essay Example Gurney loved the countryside and often took long walks enjoying its beauty. He started composing music in 1904 at the age of 14. His scholarship enabled him to enroll himself at the Royal College of Music in 1911, but his mood swings made it difficult for him to focus on academic work. He suffered from bipolar, manic depression, poor health, and had his first breakdown in 1913. After convalescing, he returned to college (Pamela Blevins, 2008, p77) World War I had an adverse effect on Gurney’s college education and that is the time when he chose to enlist as a private. He was deployed at the Western Front where he seriously took to writing poetry. (Michael Hurd, 2011) It was rather unfortunate that he was badly wounded in April 1917, when he was in the middle of writing poems. After recovering, he went back to the front. Another very unfortunate mishap that took place was that Gurney was senselessly gassed four months later, and had to be hospitalized. However, once again he to ok to writing poetry once he was discharged from hospital. But as fate would have it, once again he suffered a serious breakdown in March 1918 and yet once more, spent his time composing and writing poetry during his stint in hospital. After gradually regaining his emotional stability, he was discharged honorably from Lamia Benmoussa 3 the army in October 1918. He returned to the Royal College of Music, but sadly his mental stability continued to worsen and he was finally forced to drop out. He had suffered so much in life and by 1922, his family declared him to be insane. The following fifteen years of his life was spent in different asylums but still continued his writing during those bitter years. He contacted tuberculosis, became very sick and breathed his last on December 26th 1937 at the age of 47, in the City of London Mental Hospital. (Stuart Lee, The Ivor Gurney Collection). Gurney wrote his first elegiac World War I poem â€Å"To His Love† from the deep trenches at Seaton Delaval, Northumberland in 1917. His poetic technique was simplistic yet captivated the reader to focus upon the goodness of common things. His poems highlight conflicting memories that reflected the pain and trauma in his life. Gurney’s poetry is one that seeks simple honesty in the middle of contemporary ideas and other commonplace expressions. In his poems, he expresses the after-effects of gas and the trauma he faced while at the front, and about his experiences following his discharge from the Army. (Jennifer Kilgore-Caradec, p.38) In the poem, â€Å"To His Love†, Gurney begins on a sober note with a traditional sort of elegy, reminiscing about the happy days spent in the past, with his friend, but sadly now he lies dead. He is unable to even glance at his friend’s lacerated body and filled with grief, expresses himself through a note of rising hysteria as Lamia Benmoussa 4 he feels helpless in trying to erase the grotesque memory of his beloved frie nd. (Glynn Maxwell, 2011). There is mention of the River Severn and Gloucestershire, where, together in the company of his dear friend, are associated with two themes in the poem. The poem is a soliloquy and an elegy in which one of the soldiers is found talking to the fiance’ or the girlfriend about the death of a soldier. He mourns with grief at this loss and regrets that he has lost the company of this soldier forever and will never be able to redeem that pleasure again. Gurney’s inspiration for this poem was drawn from the supposed death of Willy Harvey who was his dearest friend, in August 1916. Explain why the American economy expanded so much and so fast between 1890 and 1920. Between 1890 and 1920, the American economy expanded hugely at an extremely fast pace. This growth saw, by 1900, people employed in manufacturing, mining, construction and services rise from 4 million to 18 million and the USA was producing 30% of the worlds’ manufactured goods. There were many factors that caused this growth such as the development of the railways, immigration, a large supply of natural resources, the idea of the ‘American Dream’ and monopolies. One of the biggest factors of the rapid economic expansion was the development in transport and communication systems. The development of the railway provided links that allowed the creation of a national market and access to raw materials. Also, the building of the railroads was a stimulus to industrial development in itself. By 1890, the revenue from railroads was over $1,000 million; double that of the federal government, and the mileage had increased from 30,000 miles to over 190,000 between 1860 and 1900. This development of the railway was partly due to the mass immigration that came from Europe. The huge, sudden growth in population formed an unending supply if cheap, eager labour. Men were paid considerably small wages to complete tasks such as building the railways. Developments in communications such as the telegraph in 1944 and the telephone in 1876 were also very significant. This allowed large scale management to communicate effectively nationwide and meant that companies could establish operations all over the country with no communication problems. Industrial development, sales and purchases were also now much easier to deal with and wide scale marketing and advertising spread across the West. Another important factor of the economic growth is the fact that America had an almost unlimited supply of useful natural resources such as coal, iron, lead, copper and timber. These great numbers of natural materials meant that America could almost become self sufficient and needed not to rely on other countries in order to be stable. The USA was able to put high tariffs on the land to protect their goods from foreign competition and the development of he railway meant that the transport of these goods from place to place was made much easier. Furthermore, the powerful entrepreneurs, such as J. P. Morgan, the Rockefellers of New York and Carnegie also played a big part in this economy expansion. The fact that there was barely any regulations on big business meant that people could pretty much do as they pleased when it came to business a nd companies. These entrepreneurs, controlling much of the economy and the political scene, had a huge amount of control over production and marketing. The development of monopolies; with one firm controlling an entire market with absolutely no competition, and vertical immigration; with one firm controlling all stages of production, these firms were able to become very powerful and rich. This idea of money and power spread to the everyday citizens in America and became a source of inspiration. These entrepreneurs were living proof of the ‘American Dream’ and gave people more reason to believe that if they too worked hard, they would achieve success. The ‘American Dream’ was a big pull factor for immigrants. It gave the immigrants hope and belief that they could move to the USA and start a new life. In conclusion, there are many explanations and reasons as to why America’s economy expanded so much in such a small period of time. The rise of big business meant that the economy was thriving and America were almost self sufficient. However, evidently the arrival of immigrants was a huge factor as they mostly built the entire railroad system, allowing huge advances and developments to be made.
